What
is Leadership Albuquerque?
The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of
Commerce Leadership Albuquerque program was developed
over 25 years ago to enhance the skills and enrich the
understanding of current as well as aspiring volunteer
community leaders. Every year, a group of 45 -50
people, who have demonstrated their willingness to give
their time and effort in working for Albuquerque, is
chosen to participate in the program.
The
Leadership Albuquerque Program is designed to encourage
veteran leaders and prepare aspiring leaders to “make a
difference” in the economic health and quality of life
of our community by teaching them how they can take a
leadership role in the voluntary (nonprofit) and public
(government) sectors.
With
this in mind, Leadership Albuquerque brings together
emerging leaders from across the community to
participate in the projects and interactions that result
in a shared vision for the greater Albuquerque
community. We do this through delivering an 8-month
program to 45-50 mid to senior level executives from the
private, public and voluntary sectors of our community.
How
is the Program Structured?
The
initial meeting each year is a two-day retreat in
August. From September through May, participants spend
one day together each month in various locations around
the city. The program is driven by what we refer to as
the Pillars of Leadership. They are as follows:
Leadership Development –
Leadership Albuquerque is dedicated to preparing these
executives with the tried and true skills associated
with voluntary leadership as well as the exploring
emerging thinking related to community leadership.
Civic
Engagement-
Service-learning combines service objectives with
learning objectives and engages the class participants
in self-reflection and self-discovery. By the end of
their program year, the students deliver a product or
service which contributes to the life and health of our
community.
Issues
Colloquium
– This pillar relates specifically to the education of
the class participants regarding our community’s issues
(challenges/hopes) and an in-depth look at what is
working in the community. These issues are identified
each year based upon the curriculum committee’s
assessment of emerging issues or hot topics. The topics
for each program day are theme centered and include such
topics as Education, Healthcare, Environment, History,
Economic Development, Arts and Culture and Law and Order
to name a few.
